HUD, 2008, acrylic and silk screen ink on panel, 20X20 -Mark Scantling

As it is Academy Award season, I am putting up my interpretation of Paul Newman’s “new west” cowboy from the 1963 movie “Hud”.  This film, based on Larry McMurtry’s (Lonesome Dove) novel “Horseman, Pass By” won 3 Oscars: Best Supporting Actor (Melvyn Douglas), Best Actress (Patricia Neal) and Best Cinematography, Black and White.

Paul Newman was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role, but the award went to Sydney Poitier for “Lilies in the Field”.
